My manager gave me a copy of an article from Housekeeping Monthly, May 13, 1955 called the "Good Wife's guide". I contained rules for women to follow in order to keep their men happy. For Example (in no partcular order):
1. Be happy to see him. When your fella gets home from work, or where ever, act like you're happy he's home. Jessica always acts happy to see me, so this seems to make sense, even today.
2. Don't greet him with compliants or problems. After a hard day at work, what man wants to hear it, right?
3. (this is a good one) Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours. WHAT!?!?!? Now, ladies, this is documented in a well respected magazine. You can't argue with it if it's documented. (I seen it on TV!)
4. Don't complain when he comes home late for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor comaired to what he might have gone through that day. That's just good common sense.
The rest of the article tells how women should keep their houses clean and kids well behaved and dressed nicely and how women should try to be happy and look pretty for their men. In other words, the world revolves around your man, and women shout make things as pleasant as possible for their mates. Yeah right!! It's hard to believe that only 50 years ago the information above (along with several other rule I do not have time to recount) was actually published in a women's magazine. Now-a-days, Oprah would have a burning of the magazine and lynch the man who wrote it (you know it was a man). I like having dinner ready when I come home from work. I also make sure that dinner is ready when Jessica comes home from work. It's only fair. Time sure have changed. For the better, in my opinion. I'd hate a servant for a wife. Unless she was hot. Just kidding. Save the negative comments ladies. My wife is hot and great. Honestly, I'd think she was sleeping around if she started being super nice and catered to my every need. If you all want, I can post more rules for a 'good wife to follow'. Some are pretty off the wall.

Actually, I'm betting it was a woman who wrote that article. The majority of women didn't find such things back then as offensive. It was just "good, practical, sound advice." I mean, there was nothing else for women to do back then....no options. We could be a teacher (until we got married) or be a housewife. If we were widowed, we could be a secretary or a teacher. So, it made sense back then to print an article about how to cater to your man, because being a housewife was the main thing that middle/upper-class American women "did." And catering to your man was, obviously, a large part of that. I don't know..I don't take too much offense to it, personally. It was a different era with very different ideals. I just figure our society is improving with age when it comes to women's roles.
I wasn't trying to offend anyone by writing about this article. I just thought it was funny. The funnier part was that after reading the article, Jessica brought me a cold drink and set out some clothes for me. That was because she is sweet though, not because she 'serves' me. I do the same kind of thing for her, of course. I still picked on her a bit about the drink and clothes though. In her defense, I did just mow the grass in 90 degree heat (thus the drink). Probably the funniest line in the article was "A good wife always knows her place". That kind of shit just wouldn't fly today. You're right about the time difference though, Mona. It sure was a different world back then. Honestly, I like the world today. I don't thin I could ever treat Jess an a subservient.
Yeah....it is funny how different ideals can be from just 50 years ago. Even my grandma weould laugh at that stuff now.
